Many dream of starting their own business. Once you have found a suitable business idea, nothing stands in the way of starting a business. Because this service costs money and this is scarce, especially in the initial phase, further training for business founders is a good alternative. In many cases, you can finance further training with an education voucher (external link) or take advantage of other further training funding.

What are the goals of start-up seminars?

When it comes to issues such as small business regulations, sales tax, trade tax, business accounts, subsidies and tax consultants, many self-employed people feel overwhelmed. In order to eliminate uncertainties, there are start-up seminars. In principle, attending such a seminar is not mandatory, but in some cases it is required, for example by funding bodies such as the Employment Agency.

As far as the content is concerned, start-up seminars can vary greatly. In principle, topics are dealt with that should help the participants to found a successful business. In many cases, such seminars can even be funded by the state. Similar to the start-up subsidy, start-up seminars are financially supported. What funding is available for further training for start-ups?

Job market-relevant further training courses are available in many sectors. Whether you want to be self-employed in the health and care sector, in the hospitality industry or as an event manager – there are suitable offers for almost everyone. In order to receive funding within the framework of professionally necessary further training, entrepreneurs must prove that they have been employed for at least 15 hours per week. In addition, the income limit of the taxable annual income may be a maximum of 20,000 euros, for couples with joint assessment a maximum of 40,000 euros.

In addition, individual federal states provide additional funding. In Hamburg, the self-employed and their employees can apply for the 2020 training bonus, in North Rhine-Westphalia there is an education check (external link) for the self-employed and their employees, and Schleswig-Holstein offers a training bonus.

Special regulation: start-up coaching

Also included in the subsidy for start-ups: support for start-up coaching. This funding can be claimed in the following cases: start-up, company takeover and active participation (venture capital). Freelance founders can also take part in funded start-up coaching. However, self-employed persons who work in paid management consultancy are excluded from this regulation.

In order to be able to take advantage of the start-up coaching, the following requirements are fulfilled:

  • Because the use of the funding is not intended for the time before the foundation, the applicant must have already become self-employed. The entry in the commercial register or the business registration can serve as proof.
  • The start-up coaching must be applied for within two years of the start-up.
  • The place of business and business operations must be in Germany.

If all the requirements are met and the application is approved, you have to make sure that the selected coaching eligible is. Eligible services include advice on business plans, coaching in which sales strategies are developed or in which financing talks are prepared.

Distance learning, evening courses or online courses – various further training options

The self-employed can take part in further training measures both before and after setting up their own business. So that there is no overlap with self-employment during this time, evening courses, online courses or distance learning are particularly suitable.
